2009 November: Seminar for GPs in Amsterdam

With the purpose of spreading knowledge on infectious diseases, Cirion has organized a seminar on tropical infectious diseases for general practitioners in Amsterdam, in cooperation with 1ste lijn Amsterdam (the organization for GPs in Amsterdam) on November 5th, 2009. This seminar was a great success, both in quality (evaluation 8.3 out of 10) and in number of participants (around 100 general practitioners and residents).

GPs are more and more regularly confronted with tropical infections taken to Amsterdam by travellers to the tropics, whether tourists, immigrants or business people. Diseases stemming from these infections, not previously prevalent in the Netherlands, deserve increased attention and knowledge. All the more since infectious diseases gain importance as a result of emerging infections, increased mobility, population growth and climate changes. Therefore, a programme was set up with short interactive presentations on several tropical infectious diseases, supported by a panel of experts.

The programme was accredited with 4 hours by the national association of GPs (LHV), and with 4 points by the national association of travellers advice (LCR). Kind sponsors of this seminar were GSK, MSD and Roche.

The atmosphere was pleasant, the speakers and their presentations interesting and the discussions lively. The programme expounded:

  • Eosinophilia

  • Diarrhea

  • Immigrants returning from Sub-Saharan Africa

  • Young children and adults with fever after a trip to the tropics

  • Vaccination policy of the Public Health Service of Amsterdam (GG&GD)

  • Malaria

  • Schistosomiasis

  • Dengue and other hemorrhagic fevers

  • Hepatitis A, B and C

  • MDR Tuberculosis

  • STIs (SOAs in Dutch) and HIV

  • Leishmaniasis
